The ladder item can be used to create ladders in Minecraft. Simply right click the ladder on the outer face of a block to place it. When you walk into a ladder block, you move upwards. If you stop walking forwards, whilst in the same square as a ladder block, you will move down the ladder. You do not take fall damage when you reach the bottom of a ladder.
